Thanksgiving Hawaii-Style — Ancient and Modern Traditions

Giving thanks for our Hawaii lifestyle!

Ancient Hawaiians, as with many native cultures worldwide, celebrated a festival of thanks for a successful fall harvest. Their holiday, Makahiki, spans four lunar months – not just a single day – from November through February and continues to this day with special cultural activities, sports competitions and feasts throughout the islands.

Today, along with the rest of the nation, Thanksgiving Day is an official holiday here to show gratitude for the many blessings of living in paradise. While turkey may take the spotlight on our tables, we are as likely to prepare it outdoors in an imu (an underground pit where it is slow smoked to delectable tenderness and flavor) as we are to roast in the oven mainland-style.
