Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Hawaii-Style

On May 5th, we celebrate Cinco de Mayo with great food, drink and music. On Hawaii Island, there are several places to honor the red, white and green with good cheer and camaraderie.

Often confused with our neighbor country’s independence day, which is actually September 16th, Cinco de Mayo commemorates a one day battle at Puebla where a small group of Mexican troops defeated the invading French in 1862. Starting in Southern California in 1863, May 5th was seen as a day to show solidarity with Mexico against French rule. Today, more than a century and a half later, Cinco de Mayo has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture rather than a battle won.

Among them: Daylight Mind Café or Huggo’s on the rocks situated on the waterfront in the heart of Kailua-Kona where Fresh Ono Ceviche and Mexican Lasagna will be featured all day long Sunday, along with special prices on Margaritas and Pacifica and Corona beers; Los Habaneros in Keauhou Shopping Center will showcase a variety of specialty dishes, including tamales and chicken in mole sauce – live entertainment also will be on offer at both locations.

At one of the island’s most luxurious resort residential communities – Hualalai Resort – special events are one of the many Member benefits (membership is reserved exclusively for property owners). Director of Golf, Brendan Moynahan has put together a “Tacos and Tees” afternoon activity on May 5th. Participants will play a 9-hole scramble-style tournament on the member-only Ke’olu Golf Course and then enjoy drinks, tacos and awards at the Hualalai Canoe Club – another beautiful member-only facility set ocean side at the resort.
